The AILG IT Committee collaborates with MIT’s IS&T (Information Systems and Technology) department on a variety of technical projects for the FSILG community, including the following:
- Providing fiber optic Internet connections to FSILG houses.
- Providing wireless networks within FSILG houses.
- Coordinating infrastructure updates and support with MIT’s IS&T department.
- Maintaining the platforms for the AILG web site (ailg.mit.edu)
- Maintaining the Mailman platform for the AILG mailing lists.
- Providing optional VOIP telephony to FSILG houses.

FSILG Network Information

Effective July 1, 2023 all FSILGs with alumni-operated houses (most FSILGs!) signed up to a slightly updated version 6.0 of the Network Management Program Agreement specifying the division of responsibilities between IS&T and the FSILG. To help FSILGs estimate future network expenses, the AILG IT Committee created this Estimated Expenses Spreadsheet.
It is important that our members understand that their active cooperation is required a few times a year for IS&T visits to their residences. In the unlikely event that an FSILG cannot respond, the AILG Board approved this escalation procedure, along with this typical escalation notice letter. Our AILG Committee hopes never to send one of these; cooperation to date has in fact been excellent.
Also, FSILGs with alumni-operated houses are required to designate at least one current undergraduate member as their Network Contact. The Network Contact serves as liaison with MIT IS&T for troubleshooting network problems and provides access to network equipment when needed. As of March 2016, Network Contacts are designated using the FCI Contact List, which is accessed at fsilg.coop. If no one is designated as a Network Contact, the undergraduate house manager is the default.
In 2014, DSL and IS&T adopted a set of principles for providing network service to all residential buildings. In 2019, the principles were updated and can be found HERE.
