MIT and the Association of Independent Living Groups (AILG) expect that all FSILG houses will be safe, secure, clean, comfortable, conducive to learning, proactively managed, and appropriately inspected and licensed.

Facilities Management: Expectations and Baseline Practices

The AILG Facilities committee provides assistance to houses in meeting their facilities-related responsibilities.  Your main source for information in this regard is the Facilities Committee’s House Manager’s Manual. This manual is kept up to date and includes what you need to know about maintenance, inspections, and policies.

A service specifically involving inspections is offered to houses by the AILG, the SLI (Safety, Licensing, and Inspections) Program, This offers assistance to houses to ensure they are ready to meet the requirements of municipal codes and associated inspections.

New volunteers are always welcome. As of September 2020, meetings are by Zoom on the first Wednesday of each month at 10:00am Eastern Time. Contact  Ernie Sabine, Chair: esabine@alum.mit.edu.

NOTICE: E-Scooter/Personal Wheels guidelines

Subject: Important Update: New FSILG E-Scooter/Personal Wheels Policy Info

As many of you are aware, Personal Wheels—such as bicycles, scooters, hoverboards, and other similar devices—are a popular and convenient means of transportation for FSILG members to get to and from campus. However, it is important to recognize that some of these devices, particularly those powered by lithium batteries, pose potential fire hazards.

To help mitigate these hazards on campus, MIT has implemented a new Personal Wheels policy, which outlines safety guidelines and procedures for these transportation devices. You can review the full policy here.

In addition to the MIT policy, we are asking each FSILG to develop its own specific policy regarding the storage and charging of personal wheels within their facilities. To assist with this, the Facilities Committee has created sample policy, tracking, and registration documents, which can be customized to fit your organization’s needs. Here are the sample templates:

We strongly encourage organizations to integrate MIT’s Personal Wheels Registration Process into their policies. This process will ensure that motorized personal wheels meet necessary safety standards, as validated by the MIT Parking & Transportation Office.

Additionally, the MIT Parking & Transportation Office will also pick up any abandoned personal wheels at FSILGs and facilitate their reuse or recycling. To schedule a pickup, please contact mitparking@mit.edu.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

SLI Specification

The SLI Specification is an important enabling document describing the requirements and overall structure of the Safety, Licensing, and Inspection Program. The AILG membership voted to accept this SLI Specification at the AILG Membership Meeting meeting held on November 17, 2022. This previous version of the SLI Specification dates from 2006.
