Winter is upon us. Low temperatures can cause frozen pipes and enormous damage, potentially resulting in the evacuation of buildings for long periods. And during IAP our houses may be sparsely populated.

For these reasons extra vigilance is called for. Every room in our houses holds the potential for trouble. Pipes for sprinklers, heat, or plumbing are to be found in all parts of our buildings. A single open window during a temperature drop can freeze a pipe and cause major destruction.

Be vigilant:

  • Check for problems daily.
  • Check for open windows.
  • Remove air conditioner units.
  • Make sure heat is on. Keep thermostats at 65 degrees F or higher.
  • Someone may have opened a window because the heat is on too high and can’t be controlled from that room.
  • A window may not have been closed properly.
  • A thermostat may have been turned down.

These and other guidelines for winter are covered in detail in these Additional Guidelines from the FSILG Office.

If you have a burst pipe or other issue please contact your alum house corp ASAP. If you are unable to reach your alum house corp, please contact help@fsilg.coop and any vendors with whom you have an established relationship.

Let’s all remain on our guards through the winter and emerge with no disasters.
